A crucial dimension of the current crisis of liberal democracy has to do with the striking inadequacy of the ways in which it accommodates the diversity of voices in the public sphere. Building on several critiques of liberalism’s treatment of religious truth-claims, the paper reflects on the lesson that liberal democratic theory could draw from the rise of populism. It argues that populism is understandable but insufficient, incomplete and unproductive reaction to the implementation of mainstream ‘public reason’ liberal approaches to democratic legitimacy. The paper concludes with an outline of the prospects for religious citizens’ contribution to maintaining the stability of a liberal democratic polity.
